Can't Stand Being Away From the Net?

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TRAVEL/business.travel/05/04/airplane.wifi/index.html

You may not be able to use your phone on a plane, but you will be able to reach almost anyone via internet. CNN stated that the days of being cut off from the Internet while you're on a plane are quickly disappearing. In the near future we will be able to e-mail, chat, or even just surf the internet for fun while on a plane. The internet is able to function by broadcasting a signal from towers all over the United States. There is a lot of testing going on with the major airlines right now and many of them already have the internet on some of their planes. It is estimated to cost anywhere from seven to thirteen dollars per flight, and most of our airlines are going to offer this feature in future. One problem that they are concerned with is the surfing of inappropriate materials. They are worried that it will offend some of the other passengers. They plan to keep this from happening by using screening software or having the flight attendants take care of the problem. The CEO of one of the companies offering the internet on planes said, nine months of Wi-Fi availability on American yielded no such incidents.
It is hard to believe that the internet has grown so fast in the past years. I can remember when the internet was first getting big, and everyone was very skeptical of it. Getting it on a plane is such a breakthrough. The only negative issue is that you have to pay for it.
I believe that the internet on planes is a breakthrough because in the last few years communication has became such an important factor in everyone’s daily lives. I can even hardly go without my cell phone. I imagine that most of us have been on a plane wanting to communicate with a person in our life, whether it is someone in your family, a friend, or co-worker, and we all know that we can’t use our cell phones on the plane. It will be nice to at least have a chance to get a message out over a plane ride if we really need too. In the article it does state that the pleasure of the internet comes at a price. It always seems that there is a catch somewhere. I believe that paying for the internet on a plane right now is fine, it is new technology. I do hope that in the future the prices will drop or even be free.
It really is remarkable how fast the internet has taken off. Businesses can now expect even more out of their employee’s. No more taking a nap on your flight, it is time to work. Just stay off any web-site that you wouldn’t be on in front of your mother. On the bright side, soon we can all check our Facebook from over 10,000 feet.
