Steroid Testing in High School

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4556250/ns/sports-other_sports/page/2/

I was reading on msnbc.com today and read an interesting article on a subject that has been in the news and all over television in the last few years, steroid use in high school. Steroids are a huge problem right now when it comes to teenage high school boys. In the eyes of Mike Celizic there is a solution, steroid drug testing. Many schools have been asked the question on why they will not start testing for steroids but will continue to test for other drugs such as, marijuana. They all give the same answer, we would if we could but we can’t afford it. The standard steroid test costs about 50 dollars for each test and the test, for other drugs the test is much cheaper. The problems with money are there, and know one will argue with that, but are we going to let that stop us from having these kids take these tests? Many young teenage kids in high school can only see the benefit with zero punishment. They can get stronger, faster, and in their eyes better looking if only they could get a hold of some steroids. Everyone knows that you can tell a teenager about the lasting effects of steroids, but will they listen to the side effects that we tell them? Mike Celizic doesn’t think so. He thinks that many of these kids can only see the positive side effects of steroids. Look at Major League Baseball, who has in just the last few years started testing for performance enhancing drugs. These guys are worth millions and they have come out and admitted using steroids. These pro ball players are many of these teenagers’ hero’s. You can turn on your television and see Arnold Schwarzenegger in the governor’s mansion, and he has come out publicly admitting that he had done steroids. What teenage boy can’t picture them self with a million dollar contract driving whatever they please and getting all the girls. On top of that, they can’t get in trouble at school for doing these drugs. Mike Celizic thinks that the government should step in and either give money for these tests or make them mandated if you are playing in high school sports.

My first reaction to this article was that those tests are not as expensive as I had originally thought they were. I thought they were in the hundreds of dollars per test, not just fifty dollars a peice. I participated in high school sports and we had drug testing. I believe that this testing kept many from taking drugs but we all knew what we were being tested for. If steroids were tested, in my opinion, a great majority of the kids would quit taking them.

I reacted this way because if you participate in high school sports and are drug tested, you only get tested a few times a year. It’s very random and the luck of the draw. Maybe they could take fewer tests to compensate for the cost? I believe that if the kids thought they even had a chance of getting caught for steroids many of them would not do them.

I vote yes on steroid testing in high school.

Exercise is More Important than Ever

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/7554293.stm

I was looking around on the internet for a blog post to write and I came across a more interesting subject than I thought I was going too at first. At BBC news in England they released an article, or should I say study of runners that has been going on for over nineteen years. This study proves that runners and/or people who participate in cardiovascular activities on a regular base live longer, age slower, and are more active human beings in their older years. The study started with 500 joggers that are in their 50’s and 500 non-joggers in their 50’s. The results were amazing, the joggers were less likely to die early from cancers and enjoyed a far healthier life and more active life style than those who did not jog. After almost nineteen years had went by, 34% of the non-joggers had died and only 15% of the joggers. Of course both sides had more trouble as they aged, but the joggers had fewer health problems in general and were living healthier lives. Another cool fact is that the joggers group did not have as many cases of osteoarthritis or total knee replacements; this really shocked the doctors giving the study. One would of thought that the jogger group would have way more knee problems than the non-jogger group. Whenever they first started this study the joggers were jogging about four hours a week and after 21 years it slowed down dramatically to 76 minutes a week. This is of course something that isn’t very shocking because of the less time, but the fact that the jogger group is now in their 70’s and still jogging is. One of the main doctors giving the study, James Fries said, “The study has a very pro-exercise message. If you had to pick one thing to make people healthier as they age, it would be aerobic exercise.”

After reading this article I started thinking that I should start a jogging regiment. I believe that jogging is a great way to stay in shape and this study has proved it to me. I can’t believe how many of the non-joggers had died, compared to the jogger group. Those numbers are pretty amazing.

I reacted this way because those numbers really are amazing. These older people who are in their 70’s have lead better more active lives than the other group. I really hope that I can put myself into that side of the study and live a longer healthier lifestyle. I think that aerobic activities are already a fun and exciting thing to do, I just hope that I continue these activities in my older years.

Walking is Free

http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/09/29/ideal.walking.workout/index.html

I was reading online at cnn.com and found a very interesting article that I believe can be very beneficial to most people. This article was about how to start a walking routine or regiment. The thing we must all know is that walking is one of the best ways for many of us to jump start into working out and even running. If you are a beginner to walking and not in the best shape this is a great start for anyone looking to loose wait and get healthier. There are many ways to start your walking, but starting slow is the way that they tell you to start in this particular article. If you are planning on walking occasionally you should start out by walking around 15 to 20 minutes at a time. You should try and walk a bit faster pace than you do when you are getting to and from places normally, such as work or home. Try to remember this is not just for fun this walking has a purpose. You should also try to set a goal for yourself in the process, maybe try and workout for three days the first week and work up to five days over a course of a few weeks. Remember that working out with a partner will not only increase the fun aspect of walking, but will help you both to set and obtain larger goals that will be beneficial in your walking and your health. Whenever you have mastered the 15 to 20 minute walk, instead of upping your time maybe you should try and change your terrain to something that is more difficult. Most people walk on pavement, so maybe you should try walking on a track that is made of base rock. Try and walk up more hills too, this will greatly increase your stamina and is a great change of pace too. Walking for longer periods of time is great if you have more time. If you can’t swing an hour walk, try and walk a bit faster. Whenever you decide to up your pace there are a few things to remember. While you walk try and keep your arms a 90 degree angles, this allows you to walk faster. Walk in an upright position and keep your abs pulled in a little and you will increase the strength in them and lower the risk of a back injury. Remember to nurse any injury you may get, and even take a few days off if needed.

My first reaction to this article was that I never really thought of walking for a workout. I recently had a knee injury and it was a nice paced way for me to burn a few extra calories. I also like the fact that walking is free, so if you’re on a budget and you don’t want one of those pricey gym memberships you can always walk.

I reacted this way because so many of us are struggling with money these days. Walking is an easy way to benefit you and is a great stress reliever, and not to mention, it’s free. I hope that anyone who reads this will at least think about the benefits of walking and if they decide that walking is not or you, I hope you chose another route for some self health.

Walking is the easiest on your body for any workout and the cheapest. Remember that buddy workouts are the ones that last, so find a buddy and walk your hearts out.

Smoke Free KC

http://snus-news.blogspot.com/2009/06/june-24-2009-on-april-8-2008-voters.html

I’m sure that some of you reading this have recently been to Kansas City Missouri, and many of you know that smoking in public enclosed places has been banned. While reading on the Snus News web site I found out how the local government has gotten away with this ban. The Missouri laws used to only pertain to larger restaurant and large areas where people gather for the no smoking ban. If you were a business owner that had a bar, pool hall, bowling ally, or a resteraunt that seats less than fifty people you did not have to have a designated smoking or non smoking area. That has changed recently with the new laws put into place by Kansas City. Now you can’t smoke in any public enclosed place in the whole city or you can be fined. You have to be outside or on your own property. Some local bar owners threw a fit over this because they said that state law supersedes that of local law and that the state law has let them smoke inside their buildings. This all went to court and the court system ruled in the favor of Kansas City because they say that the state law sis not actually say they could smoke in their establishments, but only permits them at the time.

Now we non smokers can enjoy going out on the town in Kansas City with out all the smoke filled restaurants and have a god time with out getting a head ache. I’m really glad that this ban has set in because I believe that the workers and their non smoking customers are being subject to something toxic.

I reacted this way because I am not a smoker and hate the smell of smoke. I really hope to see Joplin take some of Kansas City’s knowledge and ban smoking in all of its public places. I would probably even go bowling in this town if they would do that ban. I can’t tell you how many times I have been invited to our local bowling allies to bowl a few frames. When I get there I usually remember why I never come there in the first place. My eyes start watering and I’m ready to leave I just a few minutes. I truly believe that those workers there are being subjected to something they shouldn’t have to deal with. I think all smokers should take it outside.

Please, non-area…. (Joplin, mo.)

Best Inventions in the Last Ten Years

http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/AheadoftheCurve/top-10-innovations-decade/story?id=9204931

I was reading on abcnews.com and came across the top ten inventions of the decade. It really has been an amazing decade with many improvements in technology. Many of us can remember when computers were leading the way in technology. Now whenever you buy a new computer it is almost outdated when you walk it out of the store. They start the top ten inventions by date so I’ll give you a brief description in the same order. In May of 2000 the GPS system became more affordable and available to the public. These things are everywhere now and are a very handy device that has helped me and many others out tons of wrong turns in any traveling done. In July of 2000 we all remember the release of the Toyota Prius. These cars really are remarkable getting such amazing fuel mileage. Toyota has even sold 1,000,000 of these cars which are still being manufactured in 2009. Also in 2000, AT&T introduced text messaging. I think don’t think many of us could survive without text now. That was a great invention for communication. In 2001 the release of a free encyclopedia was released, Wikipedia, and has millions of people using this web cite every day. One of my favorite things to do on the net is file share, in July 2001 Napster was the first to introduce this type of free file-sharing. I think everyone reading this probably has a free music CD close by. In 2003 Freindster was the first to come up with a social networking web-cite, not myspace or facebook. Many of us use these sites everyday and again feel like we couldn’t live without them. My personal favorite was released in August of 2004, Google. Google has made internet search so easy for many of us. In November of 2006, the Nintendo Wii was launched and gamers everywhere had to have it. This is the first gaming system that was specifically engineered to get you off the couch and get up and game standing up. The Wii is not just for gaming either, many schools are using it to teach and it also has been a leader in helping people loose weight. In June of 2006, the Apple iPhone was released. I have one of these amazing phones and really do believe that I can not live with out it. These phones are so amazing and can do so much that I don’t even want to start to try and tell you what all it can do.

My first reaction to this article was that I can remember all of these inventions and programs being released. I use most of them on a daily basis it seems like. These are great choices for the top inventions of the decade. I do wonder why the plasma TV wasn’t put in there.

I reacted this way because it this article has reminded me what it used to be like with out these great advancements in technology. These different inventions have directly changed almost every American and most of the people on the Earth. I hope to see more of these life changing inventions in the near future.

I think there’s an app for that.

Maybe Tiger's Not Innocent

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/12/02/tiger.woods/index.html

Last week I did a blog post on Tiger Woods minor car crash. I thought the publicity was a little much for the golf pro to get over such an insignificant car accident. After reading a bit on cnn.com I realized maybe that car crash was more of a karma thing than I ever thought it could be. Apparently Mr. Woods has let a cat out the bag, there is a voice mail that a major publishing company got a hold of that lets us know that the golf pro was not being so faithful to his super model wife Elin Nordegren whom he has two children with, and one of them is only nine monthes old. By the way, that major company who published this voice mail is none other than US Weekly. The voice mail, in a nut shell, tells a certain female hostess that I (he says Tiger) would like you to change your voice mail, can you please take your name off of the recording because my wife has been going through my phone records, and she’ll probably be calling you. US Weekly can’t prove that this message is for sure Tiger Woods on the line, but it is someone by the name of Tiger, that they know for sure. (Haha) By the way, this isn’t the first time that Tiger Woods has been scutinized for being an unfaithful husband. Many people are wondering if these negitive publicity stunts are going to hurt Tiger’s many huge indorsment deals. You know that he was voted the most dominant sports figure in any single sport. He is also the first sports figure to have made a billion dollars.

Hello divorce papers, looks like Elin Nordegren is going to be one of the wealthiest super models ever. This really stinks because I always thought that Tiger Woods was a very stand up family guy whom still possesed a few more morals than the typical billionares out there. Really I don’t know about his morals, but this really stinks for his reputation and his family.

I think I reacted this way because I have always like Tiger Woods. He is very good at what he does and you can’t help but want to watch him play the game that has made him such a household name. This really is a horrable thing for any family to go through and I applaud them both for trying their best to keep this a quite family matter that needs to be between just them two.

I know they’ll try to make this a quite problem, but lets face it, we’ll know more about their problems than they will.

Tiger's Car Accident

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/11/27/tiger.woods/index.html

I was watching the news last night when I saw that Tiger Woods was involved in a car accident. I had to find out what has happened to the most famous golfer of all time. I located an article on cnn.com and read to find out more about his car accident. Tiger was leaving his house in Orange County when he hit a fire hydrant then off to hit a tree. The car accident was a one car collision that happened around 2:30 in the morning and Tiger suffered only from minor facial lacerations and was sent to the nearest hospital. He was shortly released and the officers that arrived on the seen ruled out that there was no alcohol in his system. Tiger said, "I think it's nothing more than an accident." I’m sure that most of us have been in some sort of minor accident, but when its Tiger Woods its automatically poublisised. Tiger Woods has become a household name. If you were born in a barn you might not know who hw is. Tiger has won many PGA toor victories over the years. He was also named the most dominant player in a sport this year. Of course that sport is Golf, if ya didn’t know all ready.

My first thought when hearing about this accident was that I hope he is ok. The news said that he was in an accident in the early morning hours, so I kind of thought that maybe he was out partying a bit to much and got into an accident while heading for the nearest Taco Bell. I was glad to hear that drinking was ruled out.

I reacted this way because so many affluent people are in car crashes that involve alcohol. I was very glad to find out that he wasn’t going to be accused of that. A guy that is so popular and that dominant at his sport, something like this could have even ruined his reputation as a stand up guy. I’m really glad that he is fine after his accident and hope that the pauperize leave him and his family alone.

Tiger’s fine and his golf game probably won’t suffer much from this accident. All of you Phil Mickelson fans can just wait for some other act of God to take care of Tiger Woods. (Just Kidding.)

Is Vegas Getting Green Attention?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33973218/ns/travel-seasonal/

I know that some of you have probably been to Las Vegas, also know as Sin City. Would you of ever thought with all of the huge buildings and millions of amazing lights that they were getting any green energy attention at all? Well, they are. They are getting a bit of scrutiny along with it though. A place called, City Center, one of MGM Mirage’s soon to be opened resorts is the head of a lot of this scrutiny. This place is huge, at 67 acres of resort grounds. This place has been given a high honor by the U.S. Green Building Council. This honor came at a price and some major attention. MGM designed this building to operate with much less power consumption than someone who knew a ton about energy efficiency in large scale buildings and structures would think. The main reason for all the negative attention is because many “green” leaders wonder how they can give them any applause because Las Vegas is in the middle of the darn dessert. Which leads them believe that this positive attention is purely publicity stunt and plum ridiculous. Some of the local Las Vegas business owners say that it helps sustainability. Even though they are building these massive resorts in the middle of the dessert, they still opted to try and make wise expensive decisions for less energy consumption.

My first reaction to this was that many of these places are going too be developed in Vegas anyways. There is obviously a ton of money to make over there so they will continue to build and build. As long as they are making as wise of a choice as they can and not wasting to awful much of our natural resources, keep on doing what your doing.

I can’t wait to visit this place and see it for myself. Las Vegas has become a landmark for the United States and is visited every single day by tourist all over the world. Vegas generates large amounts of cash each year and lots of it is dispersed all through our economy via taxes. With that being said, I think that since they are building there anyways it is a great idea to spend a little bit more money to save money in the future. I really think that this is a “no brainer,” and they will continue to do this in the future

I hope to hear and soon see the amazing strip at Las Vegas is still growing as soon as possible. I think that acting like Vegas is some sort of “green” accomplishing city is kind of stupid, but I do hope to see it continue to grow. If it grows and expands with larger buildings I also hope to see them use technology to conserve as much energy as the town can.

Cool-Down or Not?

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/15/health/nutrition/15best.html?ref=nutrition

I’m sure at some point all of you reading this have been on a tread mill or some type of exercise equipment before. I’m also pretty sure that everyone has more than likely finished a programmed workout and when they were finished the machine said or just went into the cool-down mode. I was reading on the New York Times today in the Fitness and Nutrition area and came across an article about the cool-down after exercising and it lets you no if it is actually something that matters. This question really bothered a couple who rode bikes together. They ride a lot and when it comes to the last mile the husband and wife race to their home. One time while they were performing their race, their neighbor saw them jump off their bike and race to the door and sit down. He approached them and asked them how they did that. They didn’t know at first what he was talking about and when he let them know they did not perform a cool-down it really got their minds wondering if they were hurting themselves from not cooling down after their workout/bike ride. The cool-down is apparently in text books across America, in fitness magazines, and in all sorts of other similar materials. After a little research this couple found out that most of these materials are wrong. Cooling down after a work out is actually almost worthless. It is more or less just a myth that sounds appropriate and not really necessary. After much research they found that many doctors have concluded the cool-down to not be much help at all, just a bit more time on the machine or hill with a slower pace.

I’ve been working out for years and have always tried to finish my cool-down program after my jogs. I’m glad to know that they really aren’t that important. I always thought I was cheating myself for not completing them at times and now I know I wasn’t. (What a relief.) I now think that they were a waste of time because when I work out I loose the “zone” I was in because of the cool-down. I sometimes will even catch myself preparing for the cool-down when putting my running/jogging times in.

I reacted this way because I am overjoyed from this article I found. I hate the cool-down when working out and now I will probably never do one again. I’m so glad I came across this article; it saves me five minutes of boredom every workout.

Hello tread mill.

Are Cops Free to Taser Anyone They Please?

http://www.truecrimereport.com/2009/11/cop_dustin_bradshaw_tasers_10-.php

I was looking around on cnn.com today and found a headline about a cop who had tasered a ten year old little girl. I didn’t think it gave as much information as I would have liked so I decided to check it out at the true crime report web cite and it was very interesting to say the least. Apparently a single mother was having some problems getting her daughter to take a shower before she went to bed. The little girl must have been throwing the biggest fit ever because her mom called the police over it. In the article it states that this mother is probably not the greatest of all parents to walk this earth and didn’t get any props for her mothering capabilities. When the officer arrived at the house for the call, he entered and saw the temper tantrum first hand. After a bit of the tantrum in front of him the mother of this child told the officer to taser her little girl. The officer carried the girl from her room into the living room while she was kicking and screaming the whole time and one of those kicks landed right in the officer’s crotch. He then pulled his taser out and tasered her in the back. He then took the little girl to his cop car and off to a youth shelter. Another crazy fact from this article is the fact that the officer can not be punished for tasering the little girl because there is no law that states how old the perpetrator must be for an officer to use their taser. The officer did get suspended for seven days with pay, but they claim that it was because he failed to have the video camera installed in the taser itself.

I can’t believe this guy even has a job after an act like this one. I mean who in there right mind couldn’t handle a ten year old little girl with a throwing a tantrum. I know that she got a shot in the dark kick to the man’s crotch, but still what guy hasn’t been hit there before in his life time. He should have still been able to handle this little girls fit. I think that the mom and the officer need to be the ones getting tasered, because they are both ridiculous.

I reacted this way because parents are supposed to be able to handle situations like this one with no problem. The officer should have just left and let the mother deal with the situation at hand. If it was a bit more out of control than he thought normal he still should not have tasered a ten year old girl. I believe that there should be a few more restrictions for the officer to able to use a taser on anyone and that the officers are held a bit more responsible for their actions in cases such as this one.

This sounds like a case for Nanny 911, but would be an episode I would more than likely watch on Cops.

PC’s are Out to Get Ya

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11881780?q=Framed+for+child+porn&p=1&sm=user&st=1

While looking around on MSNBC.com I came across a heading about some people being framed for looking at child porn. It turns out that this is a case heard all too much throughout our judicial system with people being accused of looking at illegal child porn sites on the internet. They even have a slang term for it, the SODDI defense: some other dude did it. Even though in most cases this type defense is probably bogus there are a couple of people who are innocent. The police went through and tested their computers and found that what they had did, was that many of them were trying to find a way to either get free programs or they were searching for some type of free gaming site and contacted a virus on their computer. This virus is like many out there but instead of sending them to advertisement sites, what it does is it takes your computer to illegal child pornographic sites whenever your computer is stagnant for a long period of time. This virus virtually ruined some of these people’s lives. A guy named Michael Fiola from Massachusetts almost had his life completely destroyed from one of these viruses. Luckily his wife stood by his side through the whole thing. He was fired from his job, depleted his families bank account, and virtually had his reputation destroyed by a computer virus. He had to go through the court system left and right to prove his innocence. At first he said he felt like everyone was against him because most people accused of this crime are more than likely charged for being guilty. He had to have his computer checked numerous times to prove he was telling the truth and not illegally surfing child porn sites. Also these computer checks throughout his case were costing outrageous amounts of money. His attorney said that there were bills showing over 10,000 dollars in fees for these computer scans. During this time of his case he was being scrutinized all the time, he even said that his tires were slashed, had negative letters written to him, and even had death threats. After proving he was not guilty he is now seeking punitive damages.

I know that this is negative, but what do you expect when you’re searching the internet to try and get free programs. More than likely the people running these sites are breaking the law anyways, do you really expect them to have your best interests at heart? I don’t understand why anyone would put themselves through the trouble to even look for these sites. I do believe that the guy in then article is innocent. It does really stinks what he went through and is even still going through because I guarantee trying to rebuild your reputation is very tough, but what do you expect. I do wonder if he had an updated virus protection, even if he did I think that those virus protection programs will work a lot better if you stay away from web cites that offer free stuff or any type of pornographic material.

After reading this article it made me think that no matter what you do on your computer there is someone out there who gets a kick out of trying to lure you in so that can get the stupid virus they created. On top of that, a virus like this one makes zero sense to me, I would think that anyone who can create such a unique virus would rather put effort into designing one which could make them money. Instead they make one as a prank, that’s just plain dumb to me.

Really Overdue Books

http://www.abc15.com/content/news/phoenixmetro/central/story/1-000-fine-paid-books-returned-to-library-after/kcJlNEWSDkStdi5Zi-n4bw.cspx

Overdue books are something that most all of us have had to deal with in our life time. In this case the notice was probably not getting sent to the offender of the overdue books. While I was reading on a news stations site abc15.com I came across a very interesting article about books that had been overdue nearly 50 years and then returned anonymously. This alone is crazy enough, but the sender/returnee of these books went over and beyond. He/she sent $1000 for the overdue fees. This person wrote a not to the school in which these books belonged and said that he/she had figures the books overdue costs at two cents a day and that figure would be roughly $745 because that was the going rate that they remembered that was in place at that time. He/she said if tat rate had changed then they hoped that the extra money would cover that rate. The librarian who initially got the package by priority mail said that she was just plain amazed by this act. She said that she couldn’t believe that someone would ever do such a nice thing. At the end of the note they wrote it said, “Sorry these were so late.” The librarian of this school said that these books will be on display for a couple of weeks and then be put back into circulation because they are in such great shape.

My first thought to this story was that this person is crazy. Then I began to think about it a bit and realized nice gestures like this are getting less frequent everyday. The person didn’t even want any recognition for the act that they did.

I thought that it was funny that the guy/girl gave some extra cash to make up for the difference if there was one in the fees for the overdue notices. I also wonder what books they were because they were never mentioned in this article. I wonder if this person was as surprised to find them as the librarian was who found them in the mail.

I hope we all learn a lesson from this person and return our books before they are late. I do wonder if in the future this person comes out and tells who they are.

Buying A TV

http://money.cnn.com/2009/11/13/news/economy/retail_holidayshopping_pricewars_television/index.htm

I was reading on cnn.com today and found and interesting article for anyone in the market for a flat screen TV this holiday season. Apparently if you are looking for a smaller flat screen like a 32” through 37,” this is the year for you. These flat screens are going too marked down enormously this holiday season. The bigger flat screen TV’s will be marked down even more than last year, but these smaller ones are going to be even greater bargains this year. This article states that the reason for the big price drop on TV’s is because merchants are very nervous that they won’t make enough money this holiday season. We all remember Circuit City who was the second largest electronics dealership and they closed down last year, which has made all merchants a bit scarred. They are giving these great deals in an attempt to lure shoppers in to spend money in their stores. These deals are going to be so great that they are already posting the prices for electronics especially TV’s so people will be ready for this years Black Friday. Target has already posted an ad for a 32” Westinghouse HD LCD TV for $246. This is the lowest advertised price ever for an LCD TV of that size. This price is for Black Friday customers only of course, but it is still an amazing deal if you can make it. If for some reason you’re not able to get your hands on one of these LCD models at Target stores you can look for other great deals all around. Experts say that if you can find a 32” flat screen for under $400 than you have found a great deal. One of the main reasons for the price break on the smaller TV’s is because they appeal to people who already have a larger flat screen in their living room and are looking for a smaller better priced TV for either their bedroom or any other place suitable for a television.

I’m glad to see that these prices are dropping significantly. I’m going to fit into the category that they have forecasted and will be looking for a smaller flat screen TV for my bedroom this holiday season. I hope to find a great deal, but I’m not waiting in line for hours on end for the deals on Black Friday.

I think that it about time for these price drops. It seems that the consumers have been subject to high prices on all electronics for years. I hope that these businesses realize that they can sell more of their product by lowering the price and hopefully not the quality.

Good luck to all you Black Friday shoppers looking for the great deals this year. I’ll be in my cozy bed while you all search for the best deals ever.

The Volkswagen made it Home

http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/11/06/california.stolen.vw/index.html

We might not all remember the Volkswagen van but I think we all know what it is because of Scooby and Shaggy and their Mystery Machine. This is not really relevant but while I was reading on CNN today I came across the title Stolen 1965 Volkswagen Van Recovered after 35 Years, I had to read it. Apparently a 1965 Volkswagen van was stolen years ago from Spokane, Washington. It was found in s shipping container in Los Angeles getting ready to be shipped off too Germany. U.S. customs runs random checks on VIN (Vehicle Identification numbers) before they send off loads of vehicles. When they ran this VW they found it was stolen years ago. I guess they usually don’t find cars like this on a normal basis. They said hat they find a stolen car or two each week but they are usually high end luxury or sports cars. The craziest thing about this van is that it is in perfect condition. It was originally for sale for only hundreds of dollars when it was new and now it appraises for $27,000. The van used to belong to a car dealership but they paid the insurance claim years ago, so the van now belongs to the Allstate Insurance Company. The insurance company usually will sell recovered stolen vehicles at the auction, but they don’t know what they will do with this van because of the history behind it.

I’m glad that they recovered this vehicle. I think that after reading this article I should maybe own a sweet Volkswagen van. The pictures of this beauty are on the web-cite cited above so you should check them out.

The only thing missing from this recovery is putting the criminals behind bars who originally stole this van. I think that would make this story complete. I’m feel out customs and border control guys do a great job and have gotten a great find that they can brag about over the years.

I think that it would be cool if the dealership that the vehicle was stolen from would get the first chance at buying this piece of history if they are still in business..

Overweight People are More Apt to Acquire Cancer

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33683092/ns/health-cancer/

Having to much body fat is believed to cause some cancers. Some cancers, such as, endometrial cancer a uterus cancer, body fat causes almost half of these cancer cases. Esophageal cancer, body fat causes nearly a third of these cancer cases. Right behind heart disease, cancer is the second leading killer in the United States. MSNBC states that 1.47 million people will be diagnosed with cancer this year and 562,000 people will die from it. These numbers could be dropped greatly if Americans would loose a few pounds. Researchers say that 26 percent of Americans are obese. They define that by having a body mass index of 30 or higher. The researchers also state that a third of Americans are overweight. This is becoming a greater problem each year. The researchers even figured out how many cancers cases could be prevented if the United States didn’t have such a problem with obesity, 100,500. Endometrial would lose over 20,000 victims alone from obese people making a change. What is more alarming is how much money the United States health care would save each year. Obesity cases cost an estimated $147 billion a year. This is almost ten percent of the annual medical spending each year. With these facts alone and the rising obesity level in the United States we are facing many more cancer cases each year and even more money for these cancer cases.

I didn’t realize how overweight the United States really is until know. I think that we should welcome in a fat tax on food. If the medical spending is that high from just the obesity cases in the United States we should do something about it. Fat tax might not be the answer but our government needs to make moves toward lowering these numbers dramatically.

Six months ago I probably would not have reacted this way. I took a trip overseas and realized that I was consuming more food than I should. People around the world do not eat like we do, not even close. I went to restaurants all over Europe and noticed that I was still hungry after my meals. I then noticed that most everyone around me was not overweight at all. I really believe that the American people just plain eat too much. I do think there are a few people that have a real problem, but for the most part we just eat too much.

I hope to see more people take some personal responsibility and make some positive and healthy decisions in the future. If that doesn’t happen then maybe the government should step in and put a “fat tax” on extremely unhealthy foods? If it worked we would all save money on our healthcare costs.

Inflatable Seatbelts?

http://money.cnn.com/2009/11/05/autos/ford_inflatable_seat_belt/index.htm?postversion=2009110515

Ford motor company is coming out with, yes, inflatable seatbelts. They will first be introduced in the next generation Ford Explorer. The Explorer has had a bad rap over the years because of it’s all to well known excessive roll over accidents. CNN’s correspondents believe this to be one of the reasons for the Explorer to be the first choice for this new safety feature. The way these new seatbelts work is quite amazing and simple at the same time. What they do is inflate in just milliseconds after impact. Ford claims that they work similar to how front passenger air bags do. They inflate with compressed air and stay inflated for seconds after an accident then releases the air from port holes in the belt. The key for these belts to be safer is to increase the area they cover to damper the impact on such a small area of the passenger. Ford also states that these belts will help to limit injuries to the neck and chest areas. Ford said that they have had numerous crash safety tests to prove this to be fact. Another unique feature about these seatbelt is that they are claiming that they are more comfortable. The target area for these belts is in the back seat where a seatbelt is more apt to be left on the back door and not in use. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that 82% of front passengers and drivers wear their safety belt when driving or riding, but only 51% of backseat passengers do. This is the main reason that they are putting them in he rear passenger seats. Ford claims that there has been a lot of money put into this project and hopes to improve the safety rating of the Explorer and many of their other vehicles in the years to come.

My first thought of these new safety belts was how these things are going to work. I wonder if they might even blow up and cause even more injuries during a car accident, I’m sure everyone reading this knows of someone or heard or someone getting hurt by a passenger airbag. After reading this article though, I do believe that Ford is taking a step to further their quality of vehicles especially their safety features. I believe this to be a positive thing we will see in the future.

I reacted this way because I think that any safety feature added to our vehicles is a good thing as long as they are proven and not outrageously expensive. I’m glad to see our dealerships making these improvements on our vehicles.

I look forward to seeing this product save someone’s life in the future. I too think that there will be a lawsuit to follow though. Isn’t that sad that anyone would ever even think that?

High School Violence in Cleveland

http://www.newsnet5.com/news/21464633/detail.html

Violence has become an all too familiar factor at West High School in Cleveland. Newsnet5 tells the story on their local channel and the internet. Apparently the parents of the children at this school are fed up with all the fighting going on inside the school system. They are very worried for their kid’s safety and don’t want them exposed to this type of behavior. Even the police are fed up with the constant violence. They are claiming all this violence to be from what they are calling turf wars with rival gangs. Thursday there was a huge outbreak of fighting throughout the school and after the school day was over. In between classes in the cafeteria a big fight broke out, and sent many students running for their safety. Luckily officers were nearby and many more came to the scene to stop this fighting and turf war battle. One student told the officials that that a boy punched two girls and that one of the girls was pregnant. Everyone agrees even the neighboring citizens that this gang fighting is going too far and ruining their neighborhood. There are sometimes upwards of twenty-five officers at the school to maintain the peace. The police say that there is tension all the time in between classes and after the school day. The officers they never know when it might explode so they are always ready. All of these battles are because of rival gangs members being placed in this school. Schools are expelling students from one school and putting them in another, and a lot of these expelled students are from rival gangs across town that is now being put into West High. This is what is causing these turf wars battles. School leaders claim to be doing whatever they can and will correct the problem.

I don’t understand violence. It makes zero sense to physically fight your way to get your way. I hope they can settle this problem so the innocent students have a better time and are able to enjoy their few high school years.

In the article it says that they are expelling kids from one school and putting them into another. Usually kids that are expelled are trouble makers anyways, so why would they even deserve an education? I think being educated is a privilege and if they don’t want take advantage of it send them home permanently. Isn’t that what expulsion means?

Anyone who performs crimes inside the school systems and are expelled should have to fight for their right to get back into school. If they don’t fight for their right don’t give it to them.

Funniest Mug Shot Ever

http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/10/29/iowa.marker.disguise/index.html

While reading the news on CNN I came across these two punk kids with what looks like magic marker all over their faces. It looks like they scribbled and scribbled till they were satisfied with the marker all over each others faces. They look plum ridiculous. The mug shots are priceless. They don’t look very pleased with their masking attempt in the photos. Apparently these kids who are twenty and twenty-three were trying to break into someone’s house. The police were called and told to look for two men in hooded sweatshirts and painted faces and they were trying to break into a house. The police were definitely shocked when they caught up with the suspects. The chief of police told a CNN correspondent that his officers were great at finding suspects and great investigators. I don’t think that these officers had any problem telling that these two punks were guilty or even had to use their skills. They think that these kids targeted this house over some type of girl problems and that the guy living there was dating one of their ex-girlfriends. They were both charged with attempted burglary and one of them was also charged with driving under the influence.

Sometimes people just plain amaze me. Whether they were drunk or not, or they were just going to rob this guys house. Where in the world did they get the idea of putting magic marker on their faces? I wonder if they thought they were camouflaging themselves.

After this article and thinking it over, I realized that I’m very thankful I’m not a complete idiots. These two kids deserve what they get. Can you imagine going to court and having the jurors see your ridiculous mug shots, I bet they laugh there butts off.

You should check these photos out, they really are very funny.

It's a Big Boat

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33548529/ns/travel-cruising/

I was reading on MSNBC today when I came across a heading that said world’s largest cruise ship. (I had to read it.) This cruise ship is amazing; it is 1,200 feet long and has sixteen levels. It can sleep 6,300 people including the crew and has 2,700 rooms on board. This ship belongs to the cruise company Royal Caribbean International. They spent $1.5 billion building it in Finland. This cruise ship has it all. It has volleyball courts, four swimming pools, ice skating rink, and even a small-scale golf course. The ice skating rink can accommodate 780 spectators watching whatever show might be put on. This ship has all sorts of different features. It has what they call different neighborhoods on board with different themes involved. It has parks and squares and all sorts of amazing features. In the front of the boat, the stern. There is a huge swimming pool in the daytime and at night it covers up to become a gigantic amphitheater seating 750 passengers. There is also an indoor theatre that seats even more people at 1,300 passengers. There are all kinds of cabins to choose from for any type of budget. They have loft style cabins that are 545 square feet to luxury style cabins at 1,600 square feet. On of the ships key features is that one of the areas on the boat themed after central park has a bar in it called the “Rising Tide” which moves up and down between three stories so passengers can get off at any of the three decks. This is the first moving bar. Another thing that they claim about the boat is that even though it is gigantic they had it engineered to be some what environmentally friendly. It dumps zero waists into the ocean and uses much less fuel. It actually consumes about they same amount of fuel as a cruise ship much smaller than it is.

I can’t believe these ships can get any bigger. I have not ever been on a cruise ship before, but I have seen many of them while on the beech. I can’t imagine them needing to be any larger.

After reading this article I realized this is a technological achievement. This is a grand cruise ship that I believe will certainly be a great investment for this company. I really like how they tried to make this ship as environmentally friendly as they could. That really means a lot these days and I hope that they get a few more passengers just because of that feature.

I would love to be the first one on this enormous thing. I also want to drive it! I think there is better wording for driving? Captain it maybe????

Universal Cell Phone Chargers

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/33448863/ns/technology_and_science-tech_and_gadgets/

Today on MSNBC’s top headlines they announced that the U.N. telecoms agency approved a universal cell phone charger. They said it will benefit in all sorts of areas. Customers will not have to keep track of all their chargers, especially those with two or more phones in the household. It will also benefit the environment because by doing this it will prevent 13.6 million tons of greenhouse gasses from entering the ozone from manufacturing of these chargers. It will also reduce the waste from the garbage bound chargers too. They are going to be the micron-USB style plug-in into your phone comparable to digital cameras. They also said that some manufactures would offer the regular USB plug-in so you can charge it directly from your computer instead of a wall socket. Not everyone will do this because the charge time is longer, but some will. The manufacturers will not be legally made to abide with the universal charger, but they said most generally phone makers have no problem following something that is good for their customers.

I’m glad someone finally realized that all the different types of phone and camera chargers are crazy.

I reacted this way because it’s about time we realize how stupid it is to make hundreds of different phones which all have a different charger. I couldn’t tell you how many times I have needed a charge on my phone and next thing you know you have fifteen chargers in front of you and none of them work. At my work we have an extra desk in the office. In one of the big drawers there are about twenty different chargers in it. (I’m not kidding.) If you get an extra charger you usually throw it in the desk. It’s kind of a joke, but I’ve used one of them and I’ve seen others look in there too.

Finally I can throw all those junk chargers away and clean my junk drawer out a little bit.

Travel Nice

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TRAVEL/traveltips/10/22/travel.behavior/index.html

I was reading this article on CNN.com today about being nice whenever you travel. It told many stories of travelers who got better treatment than those who were rude or expressed anger when things such as delayed flights or overbooked hotels didn’t go their way. A few ways to do this are to remain calm, flatter them, or be a volunteer. If you remain calm in a situation you just may get an upgraded room or flight. This article tells a story about a passenger who got onto a plane seated in coach. Her chair was broken and she goes to one of the flight attendants to see if she could be moved to another seat. Apparently the attendant was having a bad day a told her that the flight agreements never stated having a properly working seat in the contract. The attendant kept raising their voice while the passenger remained calm and tried to talk it out. During this confrontation another flight attendant saw what was going on and noticed who was out of line. The passenger was then quietly taken aside and took to business class. If you’re seated at your gate you can always try to flatter your gate attendant. Let them know you appreciate what they are doing and tell them they are doing a great job. Maybe if your flight is overbooked you won’t be the one held over and the angry man behind you will? If you are ever on a flight and another passenger might want to set with their significant other or child, or maybe they have a disability and could use your seat you could volunteer to give up that seat?

After reading this article, it reminded me of many circumstances where an angry customer got their way. I do think that it is probably much easier to remember those rude customers for their actions, but I also think that the people who are nice about what problems are going on are given special treatment quietly.

I reacted this way because too many people get away with being rude. I like hearing about customers being nice and getting a little extra in return. I was on a fully booked overseas flight one time. A family near me had a small dog with them. Their seats had the AC unit underneath and they weren’t able to get their dog kennel under it. The poor dad who was being very nice asked the flight attendant if he could be moved. She then asked out loud if anyone would give their seat up and trade him. I had a lane seat in the middle and gave it up for his seat in the center isle in the middle. I wasn’t very thrilled about doing this but the poor guy was going to have to hold that dog kennel on his lap for an eight hour flight! Whenever I got up to give him my seat the flight attendant called me over to her. She told me that I needed to follow her and took me all the way to the front in business class and pointed at a seat for me to set. I was thrilled and she thanked me for giving up my seat. I couldn’t believe it!

When it comes to people I think the best advice I can give anyone is to kill them with kindness.

Tennis Ball Trafficking

http://www.wwltv.com/topstories/stories/wwl101609mlopp.221e9dab1.html

I read this article at wwltv an ABC broadcasting affiliate. In New Orleans thirteen people were arrested in a drug trafficking ring using tennis balls. What they would do is fill up tennis balls with all kinds of different drugs and contraband and would throw it over the walls at the local penitentiary. They did this by using cell phones to talk to prisoners and others on the other side. They would then have them throw the tennis balls over to the inmates on the other side to make the swap. They don’t say how the money was transfered for these different drugs but are working to find out. They police officials said that it was mostly marijuana but some other drugs were thrown over also.

These criminals were supplying criminal’s drugs! They deserve to be together. I hope to see these guys make the news and go to jail with their buddies. I can’t believe they even thought they might get away with such a stupid act.

I reacted this way because criminals are so stupid. They always get caught, but I don’t understand why they sometimes try so hard. I mean come on, how do you think this would ever possibly be something you could get away with. Maybe they are elected by a higher ranking gang official or something. I would hate to be on the bottom of that sonority list and be get elected that job.

I hope these guys have fun in jail! These are some pretty dumb criminals and I hope they enjoy their time together. Wouldn’t you hate to have to explain yourself to a jury for this one?

Who Is Miles Austin

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/oct/12/austins-huge-day-rescues-cowboys/print/

Last Sunday was a crazy day for the Dallas Cowboys. Their most prominent receiver Roy Williams was out for the game from an injury. Miles Austin, the third string receiver had to step in and step up for his team. Usually the third string man would just need to try not to make mistakes; they usually don’t do what Miles Austin did. He had the best game of his career and broke a Dallas Cowboy record set by the Hall Of Fame member Bob Hayes thirty-nine years ago. Miles broke the Cowboys game total rushing yardage record and help lead his team to a 26-20 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. The winless Chiefs thought they had the game going in their favor. Then Miles broke a tackle and ran for 59 yards. This drive and others lead to a 20-13 lead over the Chiefs. The Chiefs did come back and bring it into over time, but Miles broke some more tackles on the second possession Dallas had and got a 60 yard run. Miles’ drive lead to a game winning field goal. This game was a crazy one for the Cowboys they had thirteen penalties and even missed a field goal. If not for Miles Austin this game could have went a different direction. Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said that he did amazing and that they were going to keep him playing.

I didn’t realize that Miles Austin was a third stringer for the Dallas Cowboys because he did so well. You usually don’t have a record broke by a rookie that was set by from a Hall of Fame member. Especially someone who does't start.

I reacted this way because I had thought I knew who Miles Austin was during the game. When I found out I didn’t I couldn’t believe that he was a third stringer. He had an amazing game for anyone in the NFL and deserves a lot for his performance.

Hopefully Wade Phillips will continue playing him so we can see how he does Sunday.

Bad Car Thieves

http://www.wzzm13.com/news/news_story.aspx?storyid=114693#

This week in Grand Rapids Michigan a guy named Tim Music went out to start and warm up his car in the morning. He told ABC that when he came out to leave with his son the car was gone. After getting a hold of the police they found the car just a few blocks away at a local school. The police set up on the car and waited to see if any students might have stolen this car and got into it after school, sure enough they did. Four students got into the car and tried to take off. They did not make it very far when the police were all over them. They were arrested and took to jail. Mr. Music says his car was locked and blames it on a faulty locking door. He says that he hopes that these kids are punished for the crime they committed and sentenced justly. He hates the fact that this happened to him in a neighborhood that has little crime.

My first reaction to this story was that these kids are dumb! They really should not of stolen the car in the first place, and really should not of gotten back into it.

I believe these kids are going to learn from their stupidity and the criminal punishment that they have coming their way. Grand theft auto is no laughing matter and can hopefully open these youngsters’ eyes that crime is not fun and games.

Maybe next time they won’t take their priced stolen possession to school and return to it. Hopefully these kids learn and can hopefully grow positively from this mistake.

Mom Shot While On the Computer

http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/10/09/gun.soccer.mom.dead/index.html

I was reading an article on CNN.com when I came across a gruesome story about a double homicide. Meleanie Hain the mother of three was shot to death by her husband on Wednesday. She was chatting on the internet with a web cam when it happened. Her friend whom she was chatting with did not actually see the shoot that first hit her because he was looking away. When he looked back he saw her husband standing over where she was sitting and he was firing toward the ground where Meleania had fallen. Their three children were in the house but not harmed. After he killed his wife he went upstairs to kill himself. Apparently she had just gotten with her lawyers and was planning a separation from her husband a few weeks earlier. What makes this story even crazier is that she was a little bit famous from a year ago. She took a loaded handgun that was holstered in the open to her daughter’s soccer game. The police chief then revoked her license to carry and a judge reinstated it. She was famous throughout local NRA members and other fellow armed citizens

I can’t believe anything would ever lead to the cold blooded murder of someone and then taking your own life. This man could have ruined his children’s lives because of what he did. I believe him to be very cowardly to do this and think he is probably where he belongs.

I reacted this way because what happened is ridiculous. I can’t understand what is going on in some people’s lives, but how could it ever lead to a double homicide? He shot his wife while his kids were there and then cowered down and shot himself too.

This man deserves God’s harsh punishment.

Drone Airplanes

http://www.time.com/time/printout/0,8816,1927766,00.html

Drone or what I call remote control planes are now in the U.S. Air Force. They are called Predator planes, and are manned completely from the ground in Nevada. These drone planes were first going to only be piloted by former Air Force pilots, but after some logical thinking they can now be manned by anyone capable of just understanding aeronautics and using that knowledge via computer. The U.S. Government realized that only letting proven pilots fly these was a waste of money. They spend upwards of 1 million dollars, and eighteen months of training to train an F-22 Fighter Pilot. They believe they should let these pilots stay in their cockpits. The pilots that fly the predator plane go through a training course outside of Las Vegas at the Creech Air Force Base. These pilots are said to be leading the way in this new field of drone flying technology. These new pilots are very proud of what they do with their knowledge. Their main purpose is to do reconnaissance missions in Afghanistan and Iraq but they are able to fire missiles from their plane if needed. The planning for this drone plane took twelve years before it was put into action and requires a large amount of troops to maintain and pilot these drone planes. There are thirty-seven Predator planes in use right now, and they have a staff of over 150 flying and maintaining them.

I think that these drone planes are very interesting and hope they are able to prove themselves in combat situations. I really believe that this technology will protect some of our troops and save many lives in the future.

I reacted this way because I think that any type of unmanned aircraft is awesome. If it were to go down the only thing our forces would be out is some time and money. I also believe these predator planes will give good detail and information to our ground troops from reconnaissance they do. The pilots flying these should be proud of what they do and hailed for the American lives they save. I hope to see more unmanned vehicles in the future.

If you enjoy video games this might just be the job for you. The future is going wireless and now its saving lives too.

Solar Powered Homes

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/science/10/08/eco.solar.decathlon/index.html

Solar Power is gaining in popularity every year. People all over the world are starting to see the capability of using our most plentiful resource for our demanding energy needs. They are realizing this so much that they now have an international Solar Decathlon going on. There are teams all over the world participating in this event. Each team is building a completely solar powered house and competing for which one is the most efficient. There are teams from Puerto Rico, Germany, Spain, and all over the United States. A team from Santa Clara University in California told CNN all about this competition. This team is a bit different from many other teams participating in this event because all the students on the team are undergraduates. They have been working on their home for two years and have put in over 67,000 man hours in their solar home. They call their project the Refract House. They even have a motto, “Green Living Is Not a Compromise.” They designed their house differently than others because they stayed away from the box style house and tried to make the solar panels on the roof look more like a natural roof. They also designed an iPhone application that can turn electrical circuits off and on in the house when they don’t need them. This competition is strictly supervised; they watch how much hot water is produced by the solar panels and all sorts of different energy applications. This is the forefront of what is to come in the future with solar energy.

After reading this article, it helped me realize how abundant the sun is. It also made me think that we really need to figure out how to harness power from it even if it is very expensive. I belief the money spent will be well worth it in the long run.

I reacted this way because I’m in the electrical distributing industry. I think that what these students are doing with energy efficient houses will make it easier to understand what kind of payoff someone could have by investing in some solar panels for their home. It might be a large investment at first, but an investment that will surely payoff in the years ahead.

The ideas used and designed by this team from California and the rest of the competitors should help open our eyes to what future opportunities we will have with the use of solar energy.

Bungee Jumping

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33074374/ns/travel-active/

Bungee jumping was not just some crazy thing that someone came up with. In 1950 a historian filming the some islanders in an island of Australia, found men jumping off high raised platforms with vines tied to their legs and jumping off. This practice they called land-diving, and was not only for fun but for young boys to prove their manhood. They have been doing this for hundreds of years. In 1979 a guy named AJ Hackett led this into opened up a commercial bungee jump site in Ned Zealand. Before him there were others doing this illegally. He got with scientist and developed a safer way to make the cords, unlike the ones made from other elastic bands and the jumper’s praying they would work. Since the invention of commercialized bungee jumping, it has taken off all over the world. There are extremely crazy place to jump all around, such as, jumping from helicopter with a bungee cord strapped to your feet. Not only can you jumping from helicicopters, you can jump from a helicopter over a volcano filled with lava. These jumps can be from 150 feet to 300 feet on just a cord. They say it is a lot safer now than it was ten years ago because they have designed a lot better ankle harnesses that support you with more stable and safely.

After reading this it made me want to go bungee jumping immediately. I’ve done it once and loved it! I can’t believe they can have you do it from a helicopter, let alone one that is hovering over a volcano. I also found it interesting that it originated from islanders jumping from high points with vines tied to their legs. I don’t know if I could have proved myself or not.
I reacted this way because I love heights! I can hardly wait to go bungee jump again. I think those islanders were crazy, and would enjoy watching them jump with only a vine holding them. I think they are braver than ever because I’m sure that they have seen a few of those break.

If you have not bungee jumped before you should try it as soon as possible! It really is a very safe and entertaining flight!

Cowboys Stadium is Truly Amazing

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfceast/post/_/id/3377/cowboys-stadium-a-tribute-to-excess

The owner of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones has just opened the largest capacity football sporting stadium in the world. He told ESPN writer, Matt Mosley that the stadium will seat over 100,000 people, and he spared no expense making it the nicest also. Jerry Jones plans to make this Cowboys stadium as well known as the Whitehouse. Jerry got his inspiration for his new stadium from all around the world. He traveled all over Europe to find ideas for this building. Jerry Jones wants this building to be his legacy. This stadium cost 1.2 billion dollars to build and he and the residents of Arlington believe that it is worth every penny. Jerry Jones has been the owner of the Dallas Cowboys since 1989, and has three superbowl victories under his belt. He has not only made the Dallas Cowboys the most popular football team in America, but made them the most popular athletic team in the world.

This stadium has many unique features. When the team gets ready to go onto the field or leave they march right through the Miller Lite Club, one of the many bars in his stadium. If you were looking for a ticket to one of the Cowboys games you could even go for the “Party Pass,” it’s a twenty-nine dollar pass that is standing room only and sells eight dollar drinks all game. There is room for you and 20,000 of your fellow Cowboy fans. This ticket is the best value for those of us on a budget. They are many other seats, but they cost quite a bit more. The Cowboys regular seats are priced the highest in the National Football League. Probably the most unique feature this stadium possesses is the GIGANTIC scoreboard in the center of the field. On top of that, it is in HD!

My first reaction to Jerry Jones building an athletic stadium of this magnitude was that I think he is crazy. Why in world would you need a stadium that had so much? After I thought about it though, I began to think why not? This is not only an accomplishment for the Cowboys, but an architectural one as well. The Cowboys fans have to be very proud of their team and their new stadium.

I think I reacted this way because 1.2 billion dollars is so much money. At first I thought he was kind of throwing it away just so people would remember him when he’s gone. I really think Jerry Jones not only cares about making money, but he also really cares about his fans and players. I really like how he made some of the tickets so reasonable for those fans that are on a budget.

I’m not even a Cowboys fan and I want to go to one of their games. I really want to see this scoreboard that is supposed to be amazing.

How Bad Do Teenagers Drive?

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/MindMoodNews/teen-drivers-cars-crash/Story?id=8675882&page=2

A recently published article in the journal Pediatrics said that teenagers are twice as likely to get into a vehicle accident when they have their own car instead of sharing one with their parents. Dr. Flaura Winston from The Center for Injury Research and Prevention at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia wrote an article about how parents that give their kids a car when they turn sixteen may be giving them too much freedom thus increasing their chance of having a car wreck. If they share a car with their parents, the parents are more apt to ask questions such as, where are you going, and who are you going with? She said this gives the child less feeling of freedom and makes them think more of what consequences they could get for reckless driving. She also says that in the beginning of teenage driving can be very essential for their safety by teaching them good practices, and making those aware of what risks are involved while behind the wheel. Of course, young drivers are not going to have a lot of experience, but what experience they do get in their initial behind the wheel opportunities will mold their habits for the rest of their lives.

I remember getting my first car when I turned sixteen. I couldn’t wait for the freedom I was getting ready to get a hold of. I have to admit that my parents were probably too lenient with me. (My driving record proves it.) I did quite a few reckless things with the vehicle I was given and am lucky I did not get into any major accidents. The funny thing is that when I got a chance to drive my parents vehicles I would follow all of the driving laws perfectly. They also wanted to know everything I was doing with their vehicles too.

I think this article will help me realize that when I have children I will second guess giving them a car right when they turn sixteen. I also believe that all the new state laws for young drivers will help a lot in the decision making process for our young drivers. I know that they have a lot stiffer penalties for reckless driving than a driver that has had a few years experience.
We all know someone who has been affected from a car accident and I believe that we should try to give our young drivers as much experience as we possibly can. Hopefully these new laws will save some of these teenage drivers lives.

Bomb Maker Captured

http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/24/terror.indictment/index.html

A twenty-four year old man from Colorado named Najibullah Zazi was arrested this week because he is believed to be in on a bomb making conspiracy against the United States. The authorities told CNN they do not believe that Zazi is planning an attack in Colorado. The authorities want to bring him bring Zazi to New York instead of having him in Colorado because they think that is where he was planning on detonating his bomb. If they are right and can prove that Najibullah Zazi is in fact attempting to build bombs to use against the United States, he will face a possible life sentence in prison. Apparently Zazi has been receiving bomb-making instructions from Pakistan and has been purchasing items that can be used to make a bomb. The FBI said that Zazi had been conducting research on the internet on how to make a specific bomb and has even purchased the necessary components to produce this bomb. Many of the components of the bomb Zazi is being charged for attempting to make can be obtained by using household items and items from home stores. All Zazi had to do is get the specific chemicals he needed out of them. Some of these items include hydrogen peroxide, acetone products that are found in finger nail polish remover, and muriatic acid which you can get at any home or farm store. Zazi was on surveillance cameras buying up large amounts of these products and also buying them far from home.

My initial response to this article was that I can’t believe a person would want to harm innocent people. I also think that this Najibullah Zazi is guilty of the crimes that the authorities have sentenced him too because there is a lot of evidence of him buying up the supplies. It is very disturbing that someone can surf the internet and find out how to build a bomb from ordinary household products, and it is crazy what damage can be created. I also think Zazi is a coward because bombing something you deem as a threat is a way to not have to see what damage you created or he could take your own life which is the most cowardly way out.

I reacted this way because these terrorist are ridiculous. I was reading in an article earlier about the Al Qaeda’s “terrorist” manual and it would tell you exactly how, when, and where to bomb while taking your own life. I can hardly fathom any kind of people that support that sort of ideals. I’m very thankful to our government organizations who have found the evidence to charge this guy, who knows what he was going to do. I still remember where I was on 9-11 and sure most of the people reading this do too. That reminds me that anyone trying to commit crimes against what I believe to be the greatest county in the world should be held very accountable for their actions and some.

H1N1 is Almost Unstoppable

http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/09/24/hand.washing.helpful/index.html

Washing your hands might not help prevent the spread of the seasonal influenza virus or the H1N1 influenza virus. One of CNN’s Senior Medical Correspondents, Elizabeth Cohen, wrote a story of her H1N1 experience at her children’s school. Elizabeth said when she showed up at her children’s first parent teacher conference this summer she found out how big of a deal that this years flu season was going to be. She said that when the principal walked in to start the conference the principal was holding the biggest bottle of hand sanitizer she had ever seen. Later on in the school year she found out that the kids are washing their hands about every 45 minutes to keep from spreading germs around the classrooms. The bad thing about trying to prevent the spread of the flu by washing your hands doesn’t necessarily help you. Doctors told CNN that the spreading of the flu virus is unlike many common sicknesses. It doesn’t usually stay on your hand and spread by touching one another or other objects. The easiest way to catch the flu or H1N1 virus is through water and moisture. The most common being a sneeze or cough, because when people sneeze and they don’t cover their mouths the virus is spread in water particles coming from the sneeze and cough. This has become a big problem and many doctors are teaching people to cough and sneeze in their elbow joint. These doctors are not saying to not wash your hands though, they say that washing your hands frequently will help you not be as susceptible to the common cold and will help a little with the flu virus. The main thing to do to prevent the spreading of the flu is to make sure if you get it you should stay home.

My first reaction to this article was, wow, I just had a meeting on this very subject and they really stressed the fact on washing your hands. They also stressed covering your mouth when coughing and sneezing, but washing your hands was the main point stressed.

I think I reacted this way because I had really not payed a lot of attention to the flu. I would just get the yearly vaccine and go on. This is different because it is probably the biggest epidemic to go around in a long time. I remember the bird flu and few other illnesses going around but nothing like this. The H1N1 flu has been showing up so much more than normal this year it is scary. The typical flu season is in late December and January, not September. My company and many others are already planning for major amounts of people being off at a time.

Hopefully you all have a lot of sick time built up, because it sounds like many of us are going to need it. Don’t forget to stock up on vitamin c.

A Movie like Robbery

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32982900
In Stockholm, Sweden there was a robbery unlike many we have heard around the United States. The Robbers stole a helicopter and broke into a cash depot that is run by the security company G4S PLC. This building is where banks and other large businesses in Sweden store their cash that they transport to other banks or businesses. These criminals hovered above the cash depot with their stolen helicopter and winched themselves down to the top of the building. They entered the building around five in the morning by breaking a window, and while there were employees inside. During this very elaborate heist not one person was even harmed. MSNBC said that a witness told local news teams that he had seen the helicopter above the cash depot for fifteen or more minutes. There was a Swat team on scene trying to get into the building using a battering ram. By the time authorities got into the building the heist was over. The police found the helicopter shortly after about fifteen miles away and no criminals in sight. The police were not able to use their helicopters because earlier that day there was bomb threats in their hanger. G4S PLC has offered a reward for any information on the arrest of these criminals, but they did not say how much, nor did they release the amount of money that was taken from their depot. These criminals really did their research to commit this robbery.

After reading this article I realized that robberies sometimes are staged like those in Hollywood. I believe this was a very thought out and elaborate heist. It is hard not to look at this robbery as movie like because so many movies are made similar to the way this crime went on. I’m sure most people reading this have seen a similar movie. Even though these criminals did an unlawful act, at least they did not kill anyone. Even some criminals have a few morals.

Because G4S PLC did not release the amount of money that had been taken I think that it was probably a vast amount of cash. I’m sure these crooks did not try to rob this place during a time were there would only be a minimal amount of money. I can’t believe that the police didn’t have any other type of air support. It makes me wonder if they were involved or if the criminal really were able to scare them enough from their bomb threats.

G4S PLC might be offering a reward, but it sounds to me that they don’t have any money left.

Google Is Going Greener

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32776477

Google the San Francisco based company mainly known for by its search engine web site has decided to enter the renewable rescores business. They have invested a large amount of money into the research of solar electric power plants. Their head in this department is Bill Weihl, he told MSNBC that Google would be investing some of their money in mirror technology. Google is hoping this technology will be able to turn solar energy into thermal energy at a twenty-five percent less than the average solar plants can right now. Mr. Weihl said that energy prices for solar power are about $2.50 to $4.00 to build a solar power plant with the technology we have now. That means a solar electric plant that created 250 megawatts would cost upwards of $1 billion. Google is hoping to be able to cut down on these cost by investing in companies that can do research and design mirrors at a much lower cost. These mirrors are what direct the sunlight and help create heat that is used to make steam. That stream will turn a thermal turbine to produce electricity. Google is not only going to seek energy from thermal turbines though, they are also looking into designing a gas turbine that can run off of solar energy instead of natural gas. Google believes if they can design this type of turbine it would be much more efficient. Weihl thinks that the reason this technology is moving slowly is because the government is only talking about going “greener,” and not putting forth the money that would help this technology move forward much faster.

After reading this article it helped me realize how cost effective solar energy could be in the near future. If the internet giant Google is going to invest their money in technology that will help lower are electric bills and even help lower our countries emissions, I can’t help but support them. Google has seemed to be a first-rate company, whatever they touch has turned to gold. I’m really happy to see them investing heavily in something I believe in.

I reacted very positive to this article. I believe that the internet giant Google can and will create solar electricity at a much lower price for the customers and a safer price to our environment. If Mr. Weihl is right and Google is able to create a solar power plant and a lesser cost, I believe we will see a lot more solar power plants pop up around our desserts and other places where sun rays are more prominent. It is about time for us to learn how to use our most valuable resource that can create energy at little to no cost to our environment.

If Google is telling the truth, and they do what they say they are going to do. We might all be able to reap the benefits of more economical energy prices. To some this means a new TV, to others this means they will have a little more money left over at the end of the month to feed their families.

Hood Rich to Real Rich

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32862411

Rodney Morrison was a known drug dealer in the early 90’s. He was convicted and sentenced for the drug related crimes he had committed in New York. After his sentencing he decided to get out of the drug trade and get into the selling of tax-free cigarettes on Indian reservations. MSNBC said that this is a very profitable business that runs an extremely fine line with the law. Ten years into his new found business, Rodney had developed into one of the largest tax free cigarette dealers in New York. With his success came competition and these competitors were also known drug dealers and criminals.

New York is upset with all the tax money they are not getting from the purchasing of tax-free cigarettes. They are losing upwards of 700 million dollars in cigarette revenue each year because Rodney Morrison and other tax-free cigarette companies are bending their states laws in order to make it rich. These companies have been left alone for years for fear of making problems with the local Indian reservations were these companies are located. Rodney and the others have figured out how to get away with selling cigarettes to not only the Indians on the reservation that live there, but illegally to Non-Native Americans living outside these reservations. The tax free organizations on these reservations were intended to only benefit the local Indians living on these reservations. The particular reservation were Rodney has located his business is only 55 acres and has only 300 people living on it. It has around twelve or so tax-free cigarette shops on it, and these shops sell a large amount of the total cigarettes sold throughout New York. Rodney alone has made $172 million in less than five years. This is going on because states can’t collect taxes on Indian land. This can cut the price of cigarettes’ nearly in half in New York. Since it is so much cheaper to buy cigarettes from Indian reservations, cigarette stores are buying up large quantities of their products and selling them elsewhere illegally.

My first thoughts were that I couldn’t believe that New York or any other state would let any type of shady business like this survive. They all know that this is a profitable way to make large amounts of money under the radar. I don’t understand why any state government would be afraid of a small Indian reservations wrath, especially when they are performing illegal activity.
I reacted this way because I think New York and other states need to take a stronger stand against the unlawful use of Indian reservations. These tax-free cigarette businesses are getting away with making millions with little to no profit to the state governments. I believe that is taking money out of each of the residents living in these particular starts hands. On top of that, these are known criminals running these businesses.

If it’s not a casino, it’s a cigarette company. How long is our government going to let this go on?

Kentucky High School Football Coach Is Deemed Innocent

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32902379/ns/local_news-lexington_ky/

David Stinson, a high school football coach in Kentucky was found not guilty by a court of law Thursday. MSNBC said he was being tried for the death of 15 year old Max Gilpon. Gilpon and the rest of his football teammates were running sprints, also known as gassers. The day Gilpon passed away was a considerably hot day and the temperature was reaching the mid 90’s. Gilpon and his teammates had to run extra sprints as punishment for not practicing hard enough the day before. During these sprints Gilpon passed out on the field and was rushed to the hospital, three days later he died from problems obtained by heat stroke. During these sprints others were having trouble too. Some of Gilpon’s teammates were vomiting and others were claiming they weren’t able to complete the drill because of injuries. This was one of the major points that the prosecutors were trying to establish to convict Coach David Stinson. Stinson’s attorneys were trying to prove that this was not that uncommon of a practice. They had teammates testifying that they only ran a few more sprints than normal that day. They also used Gilpon’s stepmother and fellow classmates; they said that Gilpon had told them that he was not feeling well that day. These are some of the facts that played a huge role in Coach Stinson’s deliberation and not guilty verdict.

My first thought was I think that it would be hard to convict a football coach for the death of one his players. Football is a game about being and working as a team. Coach Stinson didn’t just punish this kid to make a point. He punished the whole team for not practicing hard enough the day before. I feel very sorry for his family, and I hope they can forgive this coach for what I believe to be an accident.

Several times I have been in football practice and have almost vomited as well. The article stated that the player was suffering from some kind of illness earlier that day, and that his medications could have been part of the cause of his death. I understand the coach’s point of view and the parents as well. Of course the coach wants to push his players as far as he can so they can reach their full potential. The parents want to make sure their children are safe, especially during organized sports.

In conclusion, I think this article can bring to your attention the dangers of pushing their student athletes to their breaking point. I hope many coaches can and will change some of their coaching styles in order to keep their players safe, particularly on hot days. Frequent water breaks and close observation will help these coaches determine these techniques.

Out With the Old In With the New

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32768000/ns/entertainment-reality_tv/

American Idol is about to get a makeover. Ellen DeGeneres is taking over Paula Abdul’s spot on American Idol. Craig Bowman a writer from MSNBC reacted like many from Hollywood and different entertainment networks. All of which can’t believe they would put a talk-show host in the judges seat on a prime-time TV setting. Fox is trying to take this season of American Idol in a different direction. They think that Ellen will represent the fans because she is more like one of them. The other judges all have musical backgrounds, but Ellen really has none to speak of. She has dealt with a lot of entertainers in her career as a talk-show host, but how is she suppose to know how to spot talent?

My reaction to this article was, “Why would they choose a talk show host?” I don’t think Ellen is the least bit qualified. The article said she would be more likely to replace Ryan Seacrest than Paula Abdul. I do have to admit, my opinion changed later on because at first I didn’t think she could be a judge, until I realized that they are just trying to take a chance and boost their ratings with someone as witty as her.

I reacted this way because I barely even know who Ellen is. To me, all she’s just a comedian. The article talks about what a big fan she is and how that is basically why she got hired. I believe that to be true as well. Also, I’m sure she has a big following with her TV show and her popularity with the public. With Ellen’s wittiness, I believe she will be able to put the obnoxious Simon Cowl in his place.

In conclusion, I bet this season of American Idol is going to be very interesting. I am looking forward to seeing her defend her responses against Simon and the other judges with actual music experience. There’s no doubt, with Ellen on board that this season won’t be without lots of laughs.

Can't Stand Being Away From the Net?

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TRAVEL/business.travel/05/04/airplane.wifi/index.html

You may not be able to use your phone on a plane, but you will be able to reach almost anyone via internet. CNN stated that the days of being cut off from the Internet while you're on a plane are quickly disappearing. In the near future we will be able to e-mail, chat, or even just surf the internet for fun while on a plane. The internet is able to function by broadcasting a signal from towers all over the United States. There is a lot of testing going on with the major airlines right now and many of them already have the internet on some of their planes. It is estimated to cost anywhere from seven to thirteen dollars per flight, and most of our airlines are going to offer this feature in future. One problem that they are concerned with is the surfing of inappropriate materials. They are worried that it will offend some of the other passengers. They plan to keep this from happening by using screening software or having the flight attendants take care of the problem. The CEO of one of the companies offering the internet on planes said, nine months of Wi-Fi availability on American yielded no such incidents.
It is hard to believe that the internet has grown so fast in the past years. I can remember when the internet was first getting big, and everyone was very skeptical of it. Getting it on a plane is such a breakthrough. The only negative issue is that you have to pay for it.
I believe that the internet on planes is a breakthrough because in the last few years communication has became such an important factor in everyone’s daily lives. I can even hardly go without my cell phone. I imagine that most of us have been on a plane wanting to communicate with a person in our life, whether it is someone in your family, a friend, or co-worker, and we all know that we can’t use our cell phones on the plane. It will be nice to at least have a chance to get a message out over a plane ride if we really need too. In the article it does state that the pleasure of the internet comes at a price. It always seems that there is a catch somewhere. I believe that paying for the internet on a plane right now is fine, it is new technology. I do hope that in the future the prices will drop or even be free.
It really is remarkable how fast the internet has taken off. Businesses can now expect even more out of their employee’s. No more taking a nap on your flight, it is time to work. Just stay off any web-site that you wouldn’t be on in front of your mother. On the bright side, soon we can all check our Facebook from over 10,000 feet.

California Forest Fire

This article talks about the massive forest fire in California. It has already taken thousands of acres. Man homes and some businesses have been destroyed and many more are in the path of the blazing fires. CNN stated that there are over 3600 fire fighters battling the fire and has charred more than 105,000 acres in southern California. Unfortunately there have been two fire fighters that have already lost their lives from this enormous fire.

My first response to reading this article was, why would these people live in an area where there are forest fires and their two million dollar houses can be destroyed. I bet their insurance is outrageous. After thinking about it, I bet these same people would ask why we live in “tornado alley.”

A fire this size is very dangerous and destructive. With the help from all the fire fighters coming in from all over the country, I believe that they will handle the fire as fast and safely as they possibly can. I was glad to hear Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared California in a state of emergency.

We should all be thankful to those who take on the dangerous task of being a fire fighter. They are there to help and sometimes pay the ultimate price doing so
